There will be music to call you to class because we don’t do clocks at camp.

  • All activities are free and led by Tink unless noted.
  • Come and go as you please. You can attend all the workshops or none of them.

Guru-guru Camp Report

Hoop Jam

Fifteen people camped with us and countless others dropped in to hoop during Golden Week Guru-guru Camp on Niijima. We practiced hoop drills, invented new moves, meditated with our hoops,  juggled, spun poi, did yoga, made music  and just plain old relaxed.

Guru-guru Camp

Words won’t describe the fun we had, so check out some of our photos from the week:

Off to Guru-Guru Camp

Guru-guru Camp gear

Guru-guru Camp starts tonight on the Niijima ferry. For Sareh, Masa and Raha, it is already underway. They have the amp and the festival tent and are getting on this morning’s jet boat to stake out a good spot for us. Thanks, guys!

You can come down to Niijima any time before May 5th for camping, hooping, juggling, rope skipping, poi, grappling, yoga, cycling, hiking, art, video making…it’s going to be a fun-packed week. Or come camp with us and relax without doing a thing.

I am so excited. The ferry can’t leave soon enough.

Guru-guru Camp in Metropolis

Sareh spins fire on the cover of Metropolis this week

Metropolis is Tokyo’s long-running English weekly events and features magazine. This week, Guru-guru Camp is part of their roundup of fun things to do during the Golden Week holiday. Not only did we get a plug, but we got the cover of the magazine. Sareh is grinning wildly while fire hooping on the beach last summer in this photo by Richard Northcott.

Inside the magazine, you’ll see Roon Roon with her LED hoop and a shot of me during Rainbow Michael’s minis workshops at the 2009 Spin Matsuri. Fabulous coverage. The text says

SPIN

Hone your spinning action and your clownish tomfoolery on the island of Niijima, Tokyo for Guru-guru Camp. This fest of themed hoop workshops with related circus-y antics such as poi and juggling is totally free, though you do have to negotiate the choppy waters on the Takeshiba ferry (¥6,000 one way; 10 hours), or the Jetboat ferry (¥9,000 one way; 3 hours). Stay one night or all week and get some exercise and relaxation—and put a definite spring in your step.

I wonder if this will bring anyone new to camp next week? Don’t forget that  non-spinners are welcome, too, so bring your friends. Camp starts on Friday morning!

Packing for Guru-guru Camp

I might have the oddest camp packing list ever: 12 hoops; 2 iPods with 8 playlists; 6 blindfolds; 1 portable amp; 1 red and white striped festival banner; 3 cameras; a variety of battery chargers and and six-outlet extension cord; two tents; class notes for five workshops; hoop mix CDs; a jar of instant coffee; a ball of twine; art supplies; large cooler box, and oh, yeah, a sleeping bag. Plus a husband with a bicycle. I’m not quite sure how I am going to get it all to the island, but it will arrive one way or another!*

What should you bring to Guru-guru Camp? I can recommend the following:

  • Tent and bedding of your choice
  • Clothes, including comfortable shoes, warm jacket and rain gear
  • Hula hoops!
  • Juggling balls, poi and other flow toys
  • Fire toys, fuel, and safety gear if you spin fire
  • Yoga mat for morning yoga sessions and hoop “floor work”
  • Blindfold for hoop meditation workshop
  • Bicycle (or money to rent one)
  • Flashlight or headlamp
  • Bathing suit for outdoor onsen and ocean
  • Cooking/eating tools and utensils; food as desired
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, insect spray, etc
  • Anything else you need to make your camping experience comfortable

* If anyone is going to Niijima on the evening ferry on Thursday 4/28 and has a car and wants to bring it to the island I will happily chip in for gas and ferry fees in exchange for some luggage space in your trunk or back seat!
