Space Explorers

Colleen’s workshop was a playful look at hooping on- and off-body, incorporating body parts you might never have considered for hoopdance.  We foot-spun hoops across our legs, tossed over our backs, stretched back to get out of the way of the hoop, made daring mid-air catches on the diagonal.

And then Colleen directed us to focus on our “second hand” – the one not moving the hoop. What was it doing? Probably nothing much. Would could it do? Lots of beautiful movements including tracing the path of the hoop’s movement and winding around  the torso.

I moved in new ways yesterday and I am excited to keep working with these ideas. Thank, Colleen, for an excellent workshop!

Special Workshop: Exploring Space!

Sunday, June 24th
3pm – 4pm (during 4th Sunday Spin)
Instructor: Colleen Nyugen

Let’s explore ways to utilize the space around and on our bodies and our hoops. Open up your range of dance and motion with off-body and on-the-body hooping, discover how to make basic moves look and feel better, and even create new tricks of your own. Be ready to open your mind and play!

A hooper since February 2010, Colleen hails from a large community of flow artists in Eugene, Oregon. She is a member of the University of Oregon’s juggling club and can be found hooping at festivals and electronic parties, as well as the flow arts gathering, Pacific Fire. Colleen is currently in Tokyo for a 4-month study abroad program and will return to America at the end of July. Until then, she hopes to learn from hoopers in Japan and to share with you the hooping styles of the Pacific Northwest.

Hoop Hanami

Saturday, April 7, 2012 • 1 pm – 8 pm @ Yoyogi Park

Celebrate the hanami season with a hoop jam and picnic. We will spread out picnic blankets in the usual 4th Sunday hooping spot – which isn’t near the blossoms, but there’s plenty of room to play! We’ll enjoy some special treats:

• A hoop parade through the park to see the soft petals falling;
• Dress-up hoop pictures with the flowers;
• Glow toys and LED hoops after dark.

Wear something pretty for the photos, if you like. Costume up as much as you choose. Bring a picnic for yourself or to share. Alcohol is almost mandatory for hanami, but it does make hooping more challenging – find your personal balance.

Precision Hooping class, Friday 3/23 at FAB Academy Tokyo

Want to focus your hoop dance practice on precision and hitting the beat in sync with other hoop dancers?

On Friday, March 23, I will share tips and training on how to execute moves with sharp, clear style. Learn some new tricks and perk up old favorites. Also, there will be lots of practice counting (…5-6-7-8!), some circus-style warm ups, and a nice long stretch at the end.

This is a special session of Mikori’s Beginners and Beyond class. Her students are currently learning a show choreography and I’ll be jumping in to help make their moves snappy and accurate. Some of the tricks we’ll focus on include tornados, isolations and pops, step throughs, transitions, and getting on and off stage with style. Even if you’re not in the show, come along to learn something new and different!

Drop-ins encouraged, beginners welcome, hoops provided. Friday 3/23, 7-8:30 pm at Fab Academy Tokyo in Roppongi. 2,730 yen.

Hooping and Skating

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mrUjmTSquZY]

Last month, I took my hoops to the skate rink to see if I could hula hoop and skate at the same time. Turns out that I can (within the limits of my skating skill) and it’s a lot of fun.

Tonight you’re invited to come play, too. The staff at the skate rink like my hoops; in fact, they asked me to bring them back! So bring yourself and your hoop and let’s show them how it works. And if you’re not a skater, they’ll teach you what you need to know.

Where: Tokyo Dome Roller Skate Arena
When: 8 – 10 pm
Cost: 1200 yen entry fee (+ 500 yen rental for roller skates or inline skates) They have knee pads; wear them or bring your own.

Hoop Factory @ Tink’s

With a goal of creating 80 hoops before 14 February, I am reaching out for your help. Would you like to learn how to make hoops? Play with tools and tape? Spend a few hours to bring some smiles to Tohoku next month?

Three “Hoop Factory @ Tink’s” events are scheduled and you’re welcome to attend one or all three – drop in after work or pop over on the Saturday. You don’t have to be here the whole time, but plan on staying at least an hour.

Tuesday, January 17. 6pm – 10pm
Friday, January 27. 6pm – 10pm
Saturday, February 4. 1pm – 6pm

What happens in the hoop factory? First we measure and cut pipe, then we prepare connectors and form the pipe into hoops. Then we decorate the blank hoops with tape.

The hoops we make in these sessions will travel with me to Tohoku for a week in mid-February, where I will be participating in the Smile Ambassador program in local schools. Each group will receive a gift of hoops, so the more hoops, the better.

If you can attend any of these sessions, please contact me via e-mail for details and directions, or RSVP on Facebook.

“Welcome to Tokyo”

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d5yYug3dQu8]

Last week, Philo Hagen from Hooping.org contacted Spin Matsuri and Hoop Tokyo about judging the next round of his virtual international hoop race. Ayumi and I both agreed to play and within an hour had organised a video shoot, costumes, and a general schedule. We convened the next morning  to make our “Welcome to Tokyo” video because it was the only time we both were going to be in the city for the next five days, though we’d each be back before for the online judging. Talk about perfect timing.

Our camera operator, Tijana, and best boy, Chaobang, were our genki support team as we dashed from location to location around Shibuya and Harajuku. They carried bags, followed us with the camera, and helped in every way as we hooped on escalators, in sushi shops, at shrines and in a huge purikura booth. I will never visit Hachiko again without remembering that dogs can’t hoop.

The four of us worked fast and furious that morning. I came home with our footage and spent the rest of the day editing and smiling at our good fortune being able to pull this off so smoothly.

The contest entrants in London, Bristol, Australia, Seattle, Wisconsin and Texas were busy, too, creating their videos that mimicked Japan and embodied grace and beauty in hooping. You can see their entries at Hooping.org: http://www.hooping.org/2011/11/amazing-hoop-race-japan

The judging results will go online on November 8th, so check back with Hooping.org to see who wins this round. They will win a prize of “Tokyo Hoopers Essentials” that I’m putting together, including at least one item that appears in our video.
