4th Sunday Hoop Market

Costume and hoop give-away day at 4th Sunday Spin! this weekend. I am paring down my wardrobe and hoop stash. Come get some fun costumes, or take home a special hoop for yourself. Bring your spare costumes and hoops – let’s share.

I will have: 2 travel hoops, 2 sets of twins, an old-skool Hoop Tokyo hoop, and half a dozen 90 cm hoops. I hope you are ready to expand your hoop collection! And if anyone wants a gigantic partner/meditation hoop, let me know and I will bring it.

From the costume closet there wil be some sexy shiny clubwear, bright pieces for practice, teaching or performance, and more.

If you want to bring hoop-related items to sell, instead of giving them away, that is fine. Be sure to mark them with prices and your name so buyers know what’s what.

WHD Dance 2013 – collaborative efforts

Image

With World Hoop Day coming up in about 4.5 months, it is time to get the ball rolling for the 4th annual WHD Dance choreography.  Hundreds of hoopers at Hoopcamp will be learning and filming the dance this year and that is really exciting.

I am asking around in the various hooping networks for some collaborative help and I want your ideas, too.

  1. What style of music would you like to dance to this year?
  2. If you could add one synchronised group move to the dance, what would it be?
  3. Any other suggestions or ideas for the choreo?

Send in your comments and ideas before June 1, please.

Floor-eography

floor-eography

There are so many ways to work out choreography. Sometimes I listen to the music and visualise the dance. Sometimes I count out beats. I use the lyrics to suggest motions.

Today I have spread out all of my dance movement cards and sorted through my hoop trick cards to create the foundation of a dance. I like doing this because it ensures that I don’t repeat myself too much. You know how easy it is to fall back on the dozen moves you love most. While repetition feels great during practice, it’s not meant for an audience. It’s not so interesting to see the vortex again and again…and again.

With cards on the floor, I find it easy to move things around, add and subtract ideas, and rearrange the structure for a better fit with the music. When I start dancing, I can peek at the cards to see if I have got all the bits I wanted. Sometimes I add more. I even hand-write new cards if I discover a missing trick or add some new movement concept.

The dance pictured is about a relationship: meeting, wooing, winning, arguing, leaving. The choreography fits the music, but the exact details aren’t decided yet. Cartwheel? In my dreams. Perhaps not in this dance.

This choreo will be my entry for the Japan Hoopdance Championship. Video entries are due by the end of the month and the contest is open to all hoopers who live in Japan (and are available to perform on October 19th, 2013 if they win). There are categories for solo, group and children. This is an unprecedented  contest in Japan; please consider making an entry!

Guru-guru Camp 2013 Recap

GGC 2013 Hoopers

What a great GGC this year. We hosted 34 people for camping and activities over  the ten days. Shiho came all the way from Sydney; we had a group from Osaka; and were delighted when Inga showed up from Germany (by way of Thailand). Other campers around the site joined us for lessons and impromptu hoop parties, including Sandra and Donnie, who were enthusiastic new hoopers by the end of GGC. We had toddlers and grandmothers in the mix this year. Artists, musicians, photographers, poi spinners and of course lots of hoop dancers.

The weather was chilly and windy, and one night of rain. Days started early and ended..not too late. The camp kitchen was always busy, with as many as a dozen people using it for meals.

Hoop DANCE Game at Guru-guru Camp 2013

During the “High-Low Hoop Dance” workshops I taught at GGC, we played a game using action verbs to create more varied body movement in our hoop dance. This video shows the dynamic sequences that our hoopers created using the prompts.

All the details of the Hoop DANCE Game, including ways to play the game and a list of the 64 dance verbs, are in the FREE STUFF section for you to enjoy.

WHD Dance 2012 Compilation Video

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e7Qh69XJqko]

379 hoop dancers in 11 countries danced this year during 32 performances and 12 workshops. What a beautiful and enthusiastic global community we hoopers take part in. Thank you to everyone who learned the choreography, taught it, shared it with friends, organised a performance, created costumes and got into the groove of this group dance.

I’m already thinking about the choreography for 2013 and should have tutorials online in the summer. (Now is your time to make suggestions or offer your help!)

The Clock Act

This is the act I performed nightly – on fire – in Thailand for Spark Circus during January and February. It’s captured here in a show at Hoop Lounge in March. Of course, we can’t burn things indoors in Tokyo, so I did it with LED hoops instead.

Being in a fire show was a new experience for me. I was afraid of the fire at first* but by the end of the 6 week run I was comfortable playing with flames. My act was very different from the more skilled performers’ pieces so I was included in the lineup almost every night. I got a lot of practice and I had to stop being scared of fire.

This video is the first time I got to see the act all the way through. I have a rehearsal video from December, but the piece evolved from its original choreography. I think I like it. I’ll keep using it and it will continue to evolve. And revolve.

* The first time the circus crew lit its tools, I had a panic attack, dropped mine, and cried. Not a great beginning.

Hoop Hanami 2013

Our hooping spot doesn’t have any cherry blossoms, so at the last 4th Sunday Spin, we made our own.

Thanks to Kana, Deko, Noda, Yasu, Masashi, and Koichi for playing along with Tink, to Tod for filming, and to Tracey for being bubbly!
